Sudden Hair Shedding? A Gosport Trichologist Explains Telogen Effluvium

A practical guide to telogen effluvium, the delayed shedding condition that often follows stress, illness, childbirth or nutritional imbalance.

Sudden Hair Shedding? A Gosport Trichologist Explains Telogen Effluvium

Sudden hair shedding can feel frightening, especially when it appears weeks after life has returned to normal. One common explanation is telogen effluvium: a temporary disruption of the hair growth cycle that pushes more hairs than usual into the resting phase.

Why shedding can start months later

Hair does not always react immediately. A fever, stressful period, operation, childbirth, crash diet, COVID infection or iron deficiency can trigger shedding two to four months afterwards. By the time hair is coming out in the shower, the original trigger may already feel like old news.

What is normal — and what is not?

Most people lose around 50 to 100 hairs a day. Telogen effluvium can make that number feel dramatically higher, with more hair on pillows, brushes and clothing. It is usually diffuse rather than patchy, but persistent shedding, scalp soreness, bald patches or no sign of recovery should be checked properly.

Why assessment matters

The reassuring news is that telogen effluvium is often reversible. The less reassuring part is that it can overlap with other conditions, including female pattern hair loss, thyroid issues, scalp inflammation or nutritional deficiency. Guessing with supplements or shampoos can waste months.

Solent Trichology Clinic in Gosport uses detailed scalp and follicle assessment to help identify what is happening and whether GP blood tests, product changes or follow-up support may be needed. Founder Deborah brings Harley Street experience to Hampshire, with in-clinic, home visit and video options available.
