Nearest Train Stations to Gosport (Gosport Has No Station)

Gosport hasn't had a working train station since the 1950s. Here's how residents actually reach the rail network — via the Gosport Ferry to Portsmouth Harbour, or by road to Fareham.

Why doesn't Gosport have a train station?

It catches visitors out, but it's true: Gosport does not have a working railway station. Passenger rail services into the town closed decades ago, and today Gosport is often cited as one of the largest towns in England without one. For day-to-day rail travel, residents rely on getting to a station in a neighbouring town instead.

Option 1: Gosport Ferry to Portsmouth Harbour

The quickest way onto the rail network is the Gosport Ferry, which crosses to Portsmouth Harbour station in about 4 minutes, with sailings roughly every 15 minutes from 5.30am to midnight. The ferry terminal on the Portsmouth side sits right next to the train station, so it's a short walk between the pontoon and the platforms. From Portsmouth Harbour you can reach London Waterloo, Southampton, Brighton and the wider South Coast network directly. See our Gosport Ferry guide for full fares and times.

Option 2: Fareham station

The alternative is Fareham railway station, roughly 5 miles from Gosport by road, reachable by car, taxi, or the First Solent bus network (including the Eclipse busway). Fareham sits on the South Western main line, with regular services towards Southampton, Portsmouth, and onward to London Waterloo via Woking, plus connections south to Portsmouth Harbour by train direct from Fareham.

Which is faster?

For most journeys into central Portsmouth or onward to London via Portsmouth Harbour, the ferry is usually the quicker and less stressful option, since it avoids road traffic and delivers you right next to the station. If you're heading toward Southampton or need a wider choice of direct London services, Fareham can be the better starting point — check live journey times on National Rail for your specific trip, as the best option depends on your destination and time of day.
